APO was originally constituted in South Africa as a Common Law Association, on June 12, 2012.
APO is a Packaging organization which aims to develop and showcase Packaging Best Practices via education, award-wining competitions, exchange of experience, across its Member Countries, including: Côte d’Ivoire 🇨🇮, Ghana 🇬🇭, Kenya 🇰🇪, Nigeria 🇳🇬, Tanzania 🇹🇿, Uganda 🇺🇬, and South Africa 🇿🇦.
APO is recognized by and full Member of the World Packaging Organization (WPO)
Is to enhance the packaging resource through strategic, collaborative partnerships globally. APO understands that the strength of the African economy lies in packaging education
Membership is open to formally constituted organizations representing packaging interests, which represent the wide spectrum of the packaging industry in their countries, in any of the countries commonly accepted as being part of Africa.
Where there is any doubt in this respect, the members will rule on the matter of eligibility for membership.
It is clarified that membership is open only to representative packaging organizations and not to individual trading or profit-making corporates or concerns or the like, who should be encouraged to join the representative organizations in their home countries.

For the purposes of the management of its affairs, the African Packaging Organization (APO) is guided by a Council comprised of one representative nominated by each paid up member, assisted by the General Secretary.
This nominated representative may be replaced at any time by the member concerned, by prior written notice to the President and the General Secretary (who will notify the other members).
The membership elects a President and Vice President and these officials, assisted by the General Secretary, are responsible for the daily management of APO affairs.
The General Secretary shall be nominated by the President for ratification by a simple majority of the members.
The objectives of the APO shall be:
1- Bring to the attention of African states the role that packaging can play in addressing some of the major development challenges facing the continent;
2- Build packaging capability in Africa by promoting and maintaining the status and business of those engaged in packaging, and by the recognition of packaging as a profession, this to be achieved by international collaboration, and by establishing, publishing and disseminating educational standards and training information, examinations, and the awarding of bursaries and qualifications as may seem appropriate from time to time
3- Encourage the competitiveness of African exports by assisting where possible in the improvement of product presentation through effective packaging.
This new packaging awards program is designed to showcase the very best of the African packaging industry.
The main criteria for packaging that wins awards and recognition in this competition are the excellent application and execution of packaging that demonstrates creative design, marketing or technology applied to packaging produced in Africa.
Any imported technology, components, constituents etc. must be declared by the entrants to identify the African input. When evaluating each entry, the local market conditions and environment will be considered for the entry’s country of origin.
All entries that achieve “Finalist” status will be eligible to enter into the WPO Worldstar Awards.
